  • Does Corex Honeycomb offer expansion facilities?

  • Corex Honeycomb has an automated expansion table and can supply expanded honeycomb sheets. The company also offers expansion equipment such as the “hand expander ” tool to customers and can provide technical advice on different expansion methods. Please contact the sales team for more information. For more information see our expansion video.

  • What does expanded and unexpanded honeycomb mean?

  • Honeycomb is manufactured in an unexpanded format and can be supplied in unexpanded slices to save transport charges and storage space. When the honeycomb is unexpanded, the cells are still closed and not yet visible. When the honeycomb is stretched/expanded, the honeycomb expands to its full size and the cells open up and become visible.

  • Which adhesives can be used for bonding aluminium honeycomb?

  • Non-volatile adhesive should be used for bonding skins to the honeycomb to prevent possible build-up of volatile substances during the curing process. This may be alleviated by using perforated honeycomb. The adhesive that will be used also depends on other factors such as the application area, skins and the equipment available for bonding. Please contact the sales team for more information.

  • Is your anti-corrosion treatment environmentally friendly?

  • Yes, Corex Honeycomb offers a chrome free corrosion treatment.

  • What is the difference between corrosion treated and untreated honeycomb?

  • For most applications Corex Honeycomb supplies corrosion treated aluminium honeycomb. This means the aluminium foil has a surface coating applied to it before being made into a block. The treatment is carried out in-house and prevents the aluminium from corroding. Furthermore it improves the bonding properties of the aluminium and is therefore recommended for most panel manufacturing applications.

  • What is drilled honeycomb?

  • Drilled honeycomb is for example used for the manufacturing of vacuum tables. For this application simple perforation is not sufficient and larger holes (usually between 3 and 5 mm diameter) are drilled into the unexpanded slices. This allows air to freely circulate between the different cells, once the honeycomb is expanded and bonded into a panel. Since the drilled holes are large and easily visible to the eye, they are sometimes referred to as macro perforation.

  • What is perforation?

  • During the manufacturing process the aluminium foil is run over a needle roller so that tiny holes that are almost invisible to the eye are punched into the foil before the block is manufactured. This allows fumes from adhesives to vent from the honeycomb during the panel manufacturing process. Since the holes are so small, they are sometimes referred to as micro perforation.

  • Which direction are the ribbons?

  • The ribbon direction is the same as the L direction.

  • Which foil thicknesses do you offer?

  • Alloy 3003 is offered in 50 and 70 micron. 5052 alloy is offered in 35 and 70 micron.

  • Can custom sizes be offered?

  • Corex prides itself in offering non-standard sizes to its customers. Non-standard sizes are subject to a minimum of one complete honeycomb block being purchased. Please contact the sales team for more information.

  • Up to which slice thickness (T direction) can you expand the honeycomb?

  • Slices up to a thickness of approximately 500 mm can be expanded. However, this depends on the density, cell size and the expanded sheet/slice size (W and L direction). In certain cases (large cell size and/or small pieces), sizes over 500 mm can be expanded. Please contact the sales team for more information.

  • What is your standard block width (T direction)?

  • Blocks made from 3003 alloy have a width of 995 mm. Blocks made from 5052 alloy have a width of either 820 or 1070 mm, depending on the foil thickness.

  • What thickness tolerance do you offer?

  • Corex Honeycomb's standard tolerance is ± 0.25 mm.

  • What is the minimum slice thickness (T direction)?

  • The minimum slice thickness Corex Honeycomb offers is 3 mm

  • What minimum size can be achieved for the L direction?

  • The minimum sheet size that can be achieved for the L direction is 900 mm.

  • What maximum sizes can be achieved for the W and L direction?

  • Depending on the cell size and density,  Corex Honeycomb can achieve sizes up to 18000 mm in the W direction and sizes up to 1750 mm in the L direction.

  • What are the standard expanded sheet sizes?

  • As a standard Corex Honeycomb offers 2500 x 1250 mm and 3000 x 1500 mm. Custom sizes can be offered.

  • How do you clarify the L x W x T direction of the honeycomb?

  • Please refer to the Manufacturing Process for more information.

  • What is the difference between a honeycomb block, a honeycomb slice and a honeycomb sheet.

  • The aluminium honeycomb block is the end result of the honeycomb manufacturing process. The blocks are unexpanded and usually between 995 and 1070 mm wide (T direction). The width can be cut down into individual unexpanded slices. The thickness depends on the customer requirement. After this the unexpanded slices can be expanded to form the finished expanded sheet. Corex Honeycomb sells honeycomb in all three formats: as blocks, unexpanded slices and expanded sheets. Honeycomb sheets are also referred to as expanded slices.

  • Which standard honeycomb types are available from stock?

  • Corex Honeycomb usually holds stock of standard blocks with the cell sizes ¾” (19.1 mm), 3/8” (9.5 mm), ¼” (6.4 mm) and 1/8” (3.2 mm). Other cell sizes may also be available from stock. More information on densities and stock material is available upon request. Please contact the sales team for more information.

  • What are the standard delivery/lead times?

  • Corex Honeycomb prides itself in offering short lead times to its customers. Generally speaking material can be offered within a time frame of 1 to 3 weeks. Corex Honeycomb hold certain blocks in stock and these blocks or slices from the blocks can normally be supplied within a few working days. The lead times also depend on the order level at the time and the quantity required. Please contact the sales team with your enquiries for more specific lead times.

  • Which aluminium alloy types do you offer?

  • Corex Honeycomb offers aluminium honeycomb made from the alloys 3003 and 5052 and is looking to increase its range to include 5056 in the near future.

  • What are the application areas for aluminium honeycomb?

  • See the Corex Honeycomb applications page for more details.

  • In which industries can aluminium honeycomb be used?

  • Aluminium honeycomb is used in a variety of different industries such as the Marine, Rail, Aerospace, Construction and Architectural and Automotive Industry. Honeycomb is also used for more specialised usages such as air flow straightening, clean rooms and ventilation applications. The application areas for aluminium honeycomb are very versatile and the material can be used almost any place where a very good strength to weight ratio is required.
